Western Oil Sands Q4 profit drops to $26.8M as operating costs per barrel decline

CALGARY (CP) - Western Oil Sands (TSX: WTO.TO) profits sank to $26.8 million in the fourth quarter while year-over-year operating costs were reduced.

# B" c* y# g3 u# z, K5 Y4 SFor the three months ended Dec. 31 earnings were 39 cents a share, down from a year-earlier $43.4 million or 92 cents a share. Calgary-based Western Oil Sands, which has a 20 per cent minority stake in the Shell Canada (TSX: SHC.TO) controlled Athabasca Oil Sands Project, said net revenue climbed to $188.9 million from $165.8 million.

Increased production pushed operating costs per processed barrel down to $20.12 from $23.44 in the period last year. Fourth-quarter production averaged 35,500 barrels a day.

' |- P' g" A& Z; |The lower operating costs came as overall full-year charges reached $28.38 per barrel from $22.06 each a year ago.

/ D+ ^- D! f# }& k. q. p  ~For the year, Western's share of the Athabasca project's costs were $286.3 million, including $40.2 million in costs for a planned turnaround of the plant.

Earlier this month, Western said it would explore and pursue alternatives to "realize the full value of our assets and future growth potential." The comment came as the company has been searching for other "downstream integration" strategies since last summer.
