Builders started construction on 468 new single detached homes last month, a 34 per cent increase from August 2013.

The increased demand is due to strong job and population growth, according to Christina Butchart, senior analyst with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.$ _# R4 K) h+ F9 p7 p- L( g9 C
