Kevin O’Leary arrived late, Kellie Leitch and Steven Blaney talked Canadian values and almost no one supported the carbon tax Tuesday during an Edmonton federal Conservative leadership candidate luncheon.
O’Leary, the businessman and TV personality seen as a front-runner in the race to succeed Stephen Harper, said his biggest challenge as prime minister would be achieving three per cent annual growth in the Canadian economy.“We’re not a pro-business country anymore. We’re not a pro-growth country,” he said as 13 leadership hopefuls spent about five minutes at each table of party supporters in an event organized by the Alberta Enterprise Group.
He called for job creation, lower corporate taxes and, as did everyone who mentioned it except Ontario MP Michael Chong, an end to carbon levies intended to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

“Any province that puts a carbon tax on their people, I will just deduct that from transfer payments,” O’Leary said.
Rival Rick Peterson, a Vancouver businessman, later criticized O’Leary for skipping a subsequent Conservative party-sponsored forum, saying “the guy who waltzed in here and cancelled on our debate, that’s bullshit … He snubs every person in this party.”
O’Leary has said he doesn’t like the debate’s format.
But the candidates — only Maxime Bernier didn’t take part — otherwise stuck to their policies and their ideas for winning the next election.
Quebec MP Blaney and Ontario MP Leitch, cabinet ministers in the Harper government, reiterated their vows to protect Canadian values, one of the key platforms of both campaigns.Blaney would like to ban the niqab face-covering at citizenship ceremonies and Leitch wants to ensure every newcomer is interviewed by an immigration agent, something she said doesn’t happen now.
“I believe we as a nation have a shared value system.”

Other candidates focused on fiscal issues, vowing to cut taxes, reduce international and inter-provincial trade barriers, and ensure pipelines to tidewater are built to allow more overseas exports of Alberta oil.
Not surprisingly, there were also lots of jabs at the Liberals and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, whom Toronto-area MP Lisa Raitt called “a lightweight.”
Raitt said her gender and background alone would help Conservatives to attract more votes if she was the leader.
“Being a female from Cape Breton who’s a mom of two … visually, there would be a different look right there,” the former transport minister said.
“I want us to be known as very professional, very effective in the House of Commons, but also open.”
The leadership vote takes place May 27 in Toronto.

其他的候选人关注的是现实问题，立誓要减税，减少国际间和省际间的贸易障碍，确保输油管建到海边以增加阿省石油的海外出口。
丝毫不用奇怪的是：也有很多“箭”是射向自由党总理贾斯丁土豆的，多伦多区的议员管他叫“不灵光”。
而Raitt却鼓吹如果她做领导，她的性别和背景会帮助保守党吸引更多的选票。
“作为一个从Cape Breton来的女性，我是两个孩子的妈。。很显然，我这样就看起来够特别”，这位前交通部长胡扯到。
“我希望我们因专业水准而闻名遐迩，在政府中工作高效，但是依然开放”。（任大心说：脑子里进的，不止是海水）

保守党领导层的选举将在多伦多，于五月27日日进行。
