Proposal to Reverse Recess and Lunch/Snack

I am the mother of XX in Grade X and XX in Grade X. I’ve experienced a problem and dilemma in the school lunch system. 1st, most schools offer only 20 minutes for lunch time. Although kids are different: some of them are quick eaters and some are not. NOT ALL kids are able to finish their lunch. 2nd, due to the insufficient lunch time, teachers are encouraging kids to eat sandwiches first. My dilemma is that if I prepare enough food to carry my kids over the afternoon they are not able to eat their vegetables and fruit; if I cut down the amount of starch they soon get hungry. I have been talking with other parents and found of I am not alone in having this problem to ensure our children have balanced meals at school.

% `8 h3 L: K4 i- H. |/ [5 D% ^The question is: In the classroom, we promote a healthy diet, eating slowly, having more vegetables and fruit; in reality, are we giving our children a chance to do what we tell them they should?

I talked over my concerns with Mr. XX. Mr. XX ensured me that kids are allowed to finish their lunch in the hall way after 20 minutes and would reinforce this with teachers. I am very happy for his efforts. However, there are still some concerns: How much incentive is there for a child to finish her/his lunch in the hallway when her/his friends finish early and head out to the playground? How are we to avoid the Eat and Run situation?

• US schools started a pilot study back in 2002. The feedback and research are very positive.

 Students are allowed to calm down before class

 Environmental friendly containers suit class not playground, where disposable is preferred. 1 v* Z# \8 w5 p( s; A: S
 Improve the overall lunch time without upsetting the whole school schedule. , \+ u, c' l0 Q: m/ s0 ^

( @1 G, x1 x( x Students need to have good quality breakfasts D* a& ?" m: U6 L
 Some logistical changes are involved. 5 L1 o# {! J$ x9 Y" X" A( M5 h; t1 o
 Students, especially the lower grades, needs time to adjust to the routine. , o0 m' y! d, {* y# a

1 D* ?( h! \* {/ q1 `, I! W9 l Mr. XX will bring up this topic again at the staff meeting. He and his staff are willing to give it serious thought. Some procedures such as a survey of parents will probably be put in place and followed.

I make the following motion: Open the dialog and start the necessary procedures to apply the Reverse Recess and Lunch/snack approach at XX School. |
