Why wear a poppy

“Please wear a poppy”, the old lady said; c+ J& D0 h) t8 c5 \
And held one forth, but I shook my head - q; c; n( _! w3 r
Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare 4 @+ u! J' F. E( R  _( {
Her face was old, and lined with care,
5 c, `  b2 N# j0 r6 e3 ~Yet beneath the scars, the years had made 1 w+ W% I) ]' H) q7 Z
There remained a smile that refused to fade.
; p$ D4 d7 F" \1 f& q3 G9 d: n" ?7 f. q0 H6 C: ~/ }
A boy came whistling down the street
) _4 c4 l6 z: F# w% T! Q# O5 RBounding along on his carefree feet
+ d, L' y1 G1 ^4 O8 JHis smile was full of joy and fun
% ^) `7 s, ~0 S) N- } “Lady” he said, “can I have one? $ X) t, R& q3 L& T
As she pinned it on I heard him say ( j% Z- @$ A( g- |# C& a  O
“Why do we wear the poppy today?” $ k' u3 b: q4 i1 y% c$ Y
The lady smiled in her wistful way . c+ c3 ]9 g' t: r
And answered “this is remembrance day” 5 g" j  o$ T% p0 Q5 G- H

  L; D7 P  j; ?# R" [“The poppy is the symbol for the, , m2 A* S' W; j" T8 g
The gallant men and women who died in the war”.% @  D/ ~2 j* [: D, j+ x7 _$ v- T1 b
“And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see” $ r% R* w, F2 V( C, b6 y

( ^3 c' N+ l9 i$ s“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes, . ?' P; U. U$ b
He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about”
% W% C- h- N2 d( P5 c* JAs the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”, + m* n2 e" S1 _2 N
He was fine and strong with a boyish smile,
3 g# g/ S2 M+ SBut he seemed to be with us a such a short while
* z# O; I" n" j6 ?4 y7 rWhen the War broke out he went away # L2 Y% Y; k5 h0 L* x  S
I can still remember his face that day
$ }( R* c: f6 S$ y1 y/ [8 t) s5 HWhen he smiled at me and said goodbye 5 c/ |/ ^% T1 @) A4 z+ Z
“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry” : k3 J1 @2 i* i. q

# I; ?& Q% r4 N# f* {* J1 DBut the War went on and he had to stay
8 Z) p9 y8 J1 y( OAll I could do was wait and pray 4 R1 p) _- M" I. G
His letters told of an awful fight 7 l" X, Z& c6 X/ `& r. p* R
I can see it still in my dreams at night ; t. [0 c+ f- f. U/ e
With the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire
( ^8 Z) b$ r" H5 b1 c) q+ |And the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire ) M  l! a! R3 F8 `6 D4 b4 i
Until at last the War was won
  h4 j, e8 x3 l/ T: lAnd that is why we wear the poppy son : [0 {0 a# H7 ~% E$ ]6 T) \
2 D( Z- F8 \* \! V
The small boy turned as if to go 2 _9 R* D. c: W. }6 v& m  m
Then stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know”
- M1 R3 m9 |8 h; e  {4 a3 QThat sure did sound like an awful fight
8 z  P+ J% v4 `, O1 Z. O. W: | “But your son, did he come home all right”? 4 [; L5 i- }9 u4 x1 [  u! T$ n% f$ w
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
& c1 h5 Y: q# O* @! L4 hBut didn’t speak., C0 E! G7 s$ Q( n, p& B

+ V3 r; g8 {# o- U7 E9 sI slunk away, head bowed in shame, ( Q: A( w7 p4 C- |/ O/ v* z
And if you were me, you’d have done the same, " ?6 y# W, w( Z5 g
For our thanks in giving is often delayed
/ p; K9 r( Q" S7 ~! U9 _Though our freedom was bought by the legions who paid. - M0 I) z5 u! z; U- }& ]1 R9 Q

' ^" ^- n' r; ?" {0 ]: f/ QAnd so, when you see a poppy worn
. r1 m4 B# z0 }% Y" ?; {2 rLet us reflect on the burden borne & y7 G  E. |2 R* b; \
By those who gave their precious all
, a( Q3 J' G. K% tWhen asked to answer their countries call " W# u: g3 S# T2 M) L
That we at home, in peace may live
" T) l" o" y0 _( `% SThen wear a poppy, remember, and give.
