Why wear a poppy

“Please wear a poppy”, the old lady said! Z- f' J- H* U
And held one forth, but I shook my head ! U/ _6 e. {& S) W7 h2 q
Then I stopped and watched, to see how shed fare
: S6 y: c) g; z/ Y9 \Her face was old, and lined with care, 3 n; s* y; ^% Z5 j. n- S8 j/ t
Yet beneath the scars, the years had made
: ~% j, Z! y. GThere remained a smile that refused to fade.
. J' f& X/ l' b) B! L2 _7 v2 X" `2 V6 r( _% c9 N2 b( f. V: T
A boy came whistling down the street
, v9 H  q* Y5 TBounding along on his carefree feet 7 c% |/ u  w- L+ w* T6 ~9 ?
His smile was full of joy and fun9 r9 S$ W& K% S  l2 j$ b
“Lady” he said, “can I have one?
  B; C8 e+ z/ JAs she pinned it on I heard him say
' W+ J  I+ o/ d+ ~- d) ]“Why do we wear the poppy today?”
' ]/ ~8 V( F8 }' f; sThe lady smiled in her wistful way 0 @' t2 f5 C- ~3 |. N
And answered “this is remembrance day”
' U( h) y6 m/ A2 W  }4 a5 f% D
' z) [* ?9 ^/ |' C3 ]9 }# q“The poppy is the symbol for the, ' T& m; f' ^" |( d' r3 R  e  \
The gallant men and women who died in the war”.( O, _6 \; V" V% ]( w
“And because they did we are free, that’s why we wear the poppy you see” 5 @1 ]% |' `8 Y. b6 O- e

0 c* y( w" J4 V1 a" d8 P“I had a boy about your size, with golden hair and big blue eyes,   [4 ^4 @# n* Q( S) H1 O
He loved to play and jump and shout, free as a bird he would race about” 8 m9 ?. U; E. x6 l
As the years went by he learnt and grew, and became a man as you will to”, # o1 [4 V! G, b$ b
He was fine and strong with a boyish smile,
1 I. J- H- t+ {2 V' x- J0 cBut he seemed to be with us a such a short while 3 s, z2 W' d6 j+ o- e* ?
When the War broke out he went away
1 m$ l4 n/ o5 \7 wI can still remember his face that day
. P" i8 U0 E; x- @* tWhen he smiled at me and said goodbye * t! N( k' h% p* L) s9 U
“I will be back soon, so please don’t cry”
8 s( G9 F: ^- P) \) B7 ?' k* m) ~6 ^. q
But the War went on and he had to stay
) f% @. v9 K- M* U/ lAll I could do was wait and pray ) C. d0 W7 ~- T, f2 h- m' B
His letters told of an awful fight
" ^- L! ~) k/ \9 CI can see it still in my dreams at night
6 C9 z! ?2 E2 [# d# JWith the tanks and guns and the cruel barb wire
# E6 x6 X7 u/ X. m, t2 JAnd the mines and bullets, the bombs and the fire
- r3 I& u8 Y0 g6 I) N6 r% b) NUntil at last the War was won 6 j% d5 D. s1 \* ^: k0 X2 n9 n& n  Z
And that is why we wear the poppy son & {$ b/ G" j  p, K- \+ U

& L* {5 {& F6 Y6 T# gThe small boy turned as if to go . h3 o. O* E2 C7 E# G$ ^: z* _% Y  \6 |
Then stopped and said “Thank you lady, I’m glad I know” % S1 C* X: p2 c7 s& {+ t9 N" W
That sure did sound like an awful fight
- K+ `; u! a* |) ^. P; T “But your son, did he come home all right”? 0 t& E8 s, N! Y& y6 Z4 {
A tear rolled down each faded cheek, she shook her head
$ U. ^/ k% F+ i& GBut didn’t speak.
. l; P9 S1 u9 _2 t7 R) ]* s# w6 d7 A# \) H
, ?5 @7 _5 V, E8 pI slunk away, head bowed in shame,
# o+ R% }- S) p9 D. m+ i) g* a1 h7 `3 QAnd if you were me, you’d have done the same,
2 E( I! g. ]+ u. oFor our thanks in giving is often delayed
9 }/ ?! d2 [5 [3 N( Y) {3 G5 WThough our freedom was bought by the legions who paid.
# [* t* x# v, u# \& k" p
. p6 `! ?0 U- s# E# U+ oAnd so, when you see a poppy worn
% A+ _  @; d  _Let us reflect on the burden borne , o, }6 f. K# L2 w' S
By those who gave their precious all 7 E1 l, s% G- o5 h8 g0 `
When asked to answer their countries call 6 h) [* K, C- n' Z: A) F3 c6 S
That we at home, in peace may live
' G4 p( c! z' i( A( |4 X& yThen wear a poppy, remember, and give.
